What

Better Brainstorms provides groups with creative and engaging improvisational activities to foster better brainstorms.
Whether working with new or established groups, Better Brainstorms' activities enhance group dynamics and encourage novel idea generation. The activities provided by Better Brainstorms not only encourage group cohesion and collaboration through the creation of shared experiences, but they also help reinforce the four basic rules of brainstorming.

When

Use Better Brainstorms as a warm-up activity to help groups transition from day-to-day activities, or as an intervention for an unproductive group. When working with a group new to brainstorming, use the activities as a way to introduce Osborn's four rules of brainstorming. If you're facilitating a group that's become unfocused, low energy, or isn't observing the brainstorming rules, use a Better Brainstorms activity to get the creative juices flowing again.

Where

It's suggested Better Brainstorms' activities are done in the same room as the brainstorming session.
Most of the activities provided by this tool are physical and require space for members to move about freely, so try pushing the chairs and tables towards the wall if possible.

Why

Ever seen a successful improvisation show? The strategies used by improvisational actors are very similar to those used in a successful brainstorming session.
Actors must be comfortable with each other, build on each other's ideas, and generate a number of scenarios and responses on the fly. These techniques align with Osborn's four brainstorming rules: 1) Build on the Ideas of Others, 2) Generate as Many Ideas as Possible, 3) Free Associate, and 4) Withhold Judgment.

Activities are organized by the four rules of brainstorming. Select View Activities to access activities that help build a particular rule.
